Pathways Overview

To provide members improved opportunities to learn and grow, Toastmasters International revitalized the education program. Based on extensive research and member surveys, the program offers:

  • Learning paths tailored to personal and professional goals and relevant to an evolving global marketplace
  • New technological resources to improve speeches and support meeting roles
  • Mobile access to educational materials (smartphones and tablets)
  • Expanded video and digital content to facilitate learning among our global community of members

As you progress through Pathways, you will develop real-world, transferable skills in many different areas such as communication, leadership, management, strategic planning, service to others, public speaking and more by  

  • Practicing and improving your communication and leadership skills.
  • Giving speeches in your club based on assignments in Pathways.
  • Challenging yourself to build and refine certain competencies and skills.

There are eleven possible paths for learning:

  • Motivation Strategies: Build motivational leadership and communication skills
  • Presentation Mastery: Build public speaking skills
  • Leadership Development: Build communication and leadership skills
  • Innovative Planning: Build creative project management and communication skills
  • Visionary Communication: Build innovative communication and leadership skills
  • Strategic Relationships: Build networking, leadership and communication skills
  • Dynamic Leadership: Build strategic leadership and conflict resolution skills
  • Persuasive Influence: Build skills to lead in complex situations
  • Effective Coaching: Build interpersonal communication, leadership and coaching skills
  • Team Collaboration: Build collaborative leadership skills
  • Engaging Humor: Build skills as humorous and engaging speaker

These path's areas of learning are based on the core competencies in the program which are

  • Public speaking
  • Interpersonal communication
  • Leading and managing
  • Leading strategically
  • and building confidence

Pathways Levels
Individual learning paths will have five levels, each increasing in complexity. DTM will remain as highest achievement and will require completion of two learning paths.  The levels are as follows:

Level 1  Master the Fundamentals
Develop or enhance your understanding of the fundamentals needed to be a successful public speaker and evaluator. You'll focus on speech writing and basic speech delivery, as well as receiving, applying and delivering feedback.
Level 2  Learning Your Style
Develop an understanding of your personal styles and preferences. You'll have the opportunity to identify your leadership or communication styles and preferences. You will also be introduced to the basic structure of the Pathways Mentor Program.
Level 3  Increasing Knowledge
Begin increasing your knowledge of skills specific to your path. You'll complete one required project and at least two elective projects that address your goals and interests through a wide variety of topics.
Level 4  Building Skills
Build the skills you need to succeed on your path. You'll have the opportunity to explore new challenges and begin applying what you have learned. You'll complete one required project and at least one elective project.
Level 5  Demonstrating Expertise
In this final level, demonstrate your expertise in the skills you have learned. You'll have the opportunity to apply what you have learned at all levels to accomplish larger projects. You'll complete one required project, at least one elective project and the "Reflect on Your Path" project to bring closure to your path.

Getting Started in Pathways

The procedures provided here are to help members through the basics. There are a number of excellent tutorials for members in Base Camp on the Toastmasters International site that provide much more detail.

Access Pathways

Choose Your Path

Note The cost of the first path is covered by your your New Member Fee.  Additional paths may be purchased for $20 each.

  1. Click Continue to Path Selection.
  2. Click Take Your Assessment from the Base Camp box.
  3. Select your language, then click Start.
  4. Complete the assessment and order your path.

Note You will be offered three recommended paths based on your assessment. Select from the recommendations or any of the other paths. Be sure to choose your path before navigating away to avoid needing to retake the assessment.

Access Your Path

Note You'll be able to access your path within 1 hour of placing your order.

  1. Click Go to Base Camp in the Access my path through Base Camp box.
  2. Click MyEducation Transcript.
  3. Click Open Curriculum next to your Path.
  4. Click View Details next to Level 1.

Launch Your First Project: The Ice Breaker

  1. Access your path.
  2. Click Activate next to Icebreaker, then Launch. (It will open in a new window.)
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to review the material and prepare your speech.
  4. Schedule your speech with your club's VP of Education
  5. Print the project evaluation resource and bring to the meeting for your evaluator.

Assess Your Skills - After

Note This step must be done within any project in order to complete the project.

  1. Launch your Icebreaker.
  2. From the menu at the bottom, select Assess Your Skills - After
  3. Complete the self-assessment.
  4. You will now see Activate next to the other projects in your level.

Completing a Level

Note This step must be done in order to receive credit for completing a level.

  1. Click Go to Base Camp in the Access my path through Base Camp box.
  2. Click Open Curriculum next to your Path in the My Education Transcript box.
  3. Click on the radio button next to the completed level .
  4. Click on Launch next to Level # Completion-Path Name.
    1. This option will not be available until all the projects is a level have been completed.
  5. Follow the instructions that appear. 

Note Once you’ve completed a level, a Base Camp manager, typically your club’s vice president of education, needs to approve your request. Not all VPEs are on top of this so you may have to remind the officer or one of the other managers – the club president or secretary.

Note There is one last step that some officers miss – the need to Submit the Education Award within Club Central so you may want to confirm your VPE is aware of this requirement .

Distinguished Club Program (DCP) Goals
The Distinguished Club Program (DCP) was established by Toastmasters International as a general measure of club success. Each year the Distinguished Club Program recognizes club achievements in education, membership growth, club leadership and club communication. This measure is not the whole of what makes a club successful, but it does reflect the activities that required for success.

Education Goals: Up to six of the Pathways Level goals below
1.  Four members complete Level 1
2.  Two members complete Level 2 
3.  Two more members complate Level 2
4.  Two members complete Level 3 
5.  One member completes Level 4, Level 5 or DTM 
6.  One member completes Level 4, Level 5 or DTM 
Membership Goals
7.  Add four new members
8.  Add four more new members
Officer Training Goal
9.  Have a minimum of four officers trained during each of the two Club Officer Training periods
Administration Goal
10.  Submit one membership dues renewal report and one club officer list to Toastmasters International before the deadline

By achieving a certain number of the targets in this program, a club can earn one of three levels of recognition:

Achieve five of ten goals   =   Distinguished Club
Achieve seven of ten goals   =   Select Distinguished Club
Achieve nine of ten goals   =   President's Distinguished Club

Path to Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM)

  • Completion of two learning paths
  • Serve as club officer for 12 months
  • Serve as Club Mentor or Club Coach
  • Serve as Club Sponsor or conduct Speechcraft or Youth Leadership Program
  • Serve as district officer for one year or Pathways Guide/Ambassador for six months
  • Complete capstone DTM project

Mentoring Member in Pathways
A mentor offers encouragement and guidance to a fellow member of Toastmasters while they work to accomplish goals. A mentor has the opportunity to share experience, wisdom, and knowledge while a protégé gains a foundation for building skills and meeting goals.

Mentoring can be a rewarding experience for both the mentor and the protégé.  As a mentor, you encourage your protégé, help them understand the rituals and logistics of meetings, practice speeches with them, and answer their questions. Of course, it's easier to advise someone about Pathways once you become familiar with the program. Encourage your protégé to take on meeting roles, as this greatly contributes to the success of your club.  Mentors are expected to assist protégés through at least the completion of Level 1. It is recommended that the protégé try to complete their first evaluation at this time as well, with the help of the mentor and other club members.

One of the projects in Level 2 of every path - Introduction to Toastmasters Mentoring - focuses on mentoring and asks learners to recall a time they were a protégé. This is a new and novel way for both mentors and protégés to fully utilize and understand this relationship.  Additionally, for members who want to learn more and practice mentorship, the optional Pathways Mentor Program is made available after a member completes Level 2.  The projects cover a range of topics from understanding your role as a mentor through a comprehensive assignment that includes a mentoring commitment lasting six months.

Base Camp

Base Camp is the member's gateway to Pathways, where they will find everything needed for their Pathways journey. There members work on projects, track progress, connect with members of their club and view badges and certificates they earn along the way. Base Camp also features resources to help guide members, including tutorials, videos, quizzes, interactive activities and more.  See the New to Pathways tab for information on logging into and choosing your path in Base Camp.

Base Camp Manager
Base Camp Managers help facilitate member progress in the Toastmasters Pathways learning experience by verifying education, approving requests, and tracking progress on Base Camp. For most clubs, the Vice President Education (VPE) will assume the role of Base Camp Manager. In the event that a VPE isn't able to perform these duties, or if a club does not have a VPE, the Base Camp Manager responsibilities will be fulfilled by the club President or Secretary. 

Note The President, Vice President Education and Secretary are the only club officers who have access to the Base Camp Manager pages.  Therefore, clubs must ensure that at least one of these officers is able to complete Base Camp Manager tasks. 

The central responsibilities of the Base Camp manager include:

  • Approving speeches outside the club
  • Verifying level completion
  • Tracking member progress
  • Verifying project completion for members using printed materials

Login as Base Camp Manager

Approve Member Level Completions

  1. Login as above.
  2. Click on Pending Requests.
  3. Click on the green check mark on the far left below Options for the members who have completed the projects in the level shown.

Note If a member who has completed their last project in a level does not appear in the list, they may not have completed the Assess Your Skills - After step. Contact the member concerning this.

Submit Educational Award

Note This step is often missed.  As with legacy C&L awards, Pathways education awards must be be submitted through Club Central

  1. Start Page: (login if not already done).
  2. Select Club Central from the top menu Leadership Central drop down.
  3. Click on Submit Education Awards.
  4. Select the member's name from the Select Member dropdown.
  5. Select the level completed from the Select Education Program dropdown.
  6. Click on Review award submission.
  7. Click on Submit Award.

Note Your name will not appear in the dropdown as you cannot submit your own award.  Another club officer must submit it for you.

Why is my level completion not reflected in my club's DCP status?

There are a couple of possible reasons for this.

  • You have not done the Completing a Level step (see New to Pathways tab)
  • Your club's Base Camp Manager hasn't approved your level completion (see Base Camp tab)
  • A club officer hasn't submitted your educational award in Club Central (see Base Camp tab}
  • You are a member of multiple clubs and your award was submitted by one of the other club's officers.  If the award went to the wrong club, contact Toastmsters International Educational  Services immediately to see if they can reassign it.
When is the last day to submit application for legacy Communication and Leadership (C&L) awards??

June 30, 2020.

How are legacy ALB (club officer) and ALS (district officer, HPL, club sponsor, mentor or coach) requirements that won't be completed until June 30, 2020 handled?

We have been told anyone who is all set to complete their Advanced Leadership requirements by June 30, 2020 can turn in their applications before June 30th. The application will then be processed by WHQ after June 30th and handled case by case. They are aware of the unique scenario and have plans in place to handle these kind of applications.  Note that no legacy C&L submissions, including requirements completed on June 30, 2020 will be accepted after June 30th.

Email the Toastmasters International Education Services team in early June to ensure they are aware of your situation with any questions about your best course of action.  

If you won't have other legacy DTM requirements completed by June 30, 2020, it is recommended that you apply the completed ones to Pathways as leadership accomplishments cannot be applied to both Legacy C&L and Pathways.

If a member decides to switch to Pathways and has already made progress on the traditional C&L track, are there options are there to transfer some of the accomplishments?
While education goals are not transferable, as long as they have not already been applied to the legacy C&L track, leadership accomplishments such as serving as club officer, district officer, and club sponsor, mentor or coach can be applied to Pathways.
As a Base Camp Manager, how do I know a member has submitted a level for approval?
When a member submits a level for approval, an email is automatically generated. The email goes to the email address listed under Club Contact and Meeting Information in Club Central.  Clubs will want to make sure that the email account is accessible by a Base Camp Manager (Vice President Education, President, or Secretary).
If a member completes Level 1 but changes paths within 30 days of purchase, do they have to redo the Level 1 projects?
No. Members can exchange a path within 30 days of purchase, regardless of how many projects or levels are completed. As Level 1 is the same for all paths, the member receives completion credit toward any Level 1 projects finished toward the exchanged path. 

Note that this is not true for a second path.  Members cannot transfer work done on their first path to their second one.
If I start on Pathways, will I lose all my progress on the Legacy track?
No. This is a common misconception. If you choose to continue on the Legacy track towards your DTM, we recommend that you ALSO sign up for Pathways to better-mentor new members who can only access this program.
What are some best practices for adoption Pathways into my club?
Host one-on-one sessions with members to guide them through the platform. Attend club officer training for ways to increase general participation in the club. Build a positive club culture that supports change and learning.
What are the benefits of participating in the Pathways program?
The benefits will vary by member and their reason for joining Toastmasters. Some include
  • Pathways directly addresses communication and leadership competencies many companies look for in their employees.
  • Pathways encompasses different learning styles so members can learn in the way that most fits their personality.
